Prof. Gautam Sen

Professor Gautam Sen is a Senior Consultant in Surgery, practicing General Surgery and Surgical Oncology for the past 40 years. He was the Head of the Department of Surgery at Grant Medical College, as Professor of Surgery, from where he retired in 2003. He is now Professor Emeritus in Surgery, for Grant Medical College, University of Mumbai (Bombay), one of India’s leading medical colleges.

 

Professor Sen had the honor of serving as one of the 6-member First Board of Governors for the Medical Council of India (India’s apex regulatory body) during the period of 2010-2011. He was appointed to the MCI in the wake of a major crisis there, and was instrumental for setting it back on its course, as well as charting major medical education reforms that have moved India forward. Since then he has served as a member of several Expert Committees of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of Government of India. At present he is serving as Member Board of Governors of National Health System Resource Center (NHSRC) of Government of India- which is a Technical Arm of National Health Mission.

 

He has been Director of Surgical Education at the Association of Surgeons of India, President of the Association for Trauma Care of India, and founding Secretary and past Chairman of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Indian Chapter.

 

Considered to be one of the most respected surgeons and leading medical thinkers in India, Dr. Sen has been instrumental in a number of pioneering efforts to bring change to healthcare delivery in the country. A few of his achievements include founding the Association for Trauma Care of India (ATCI). Under his guidance, ATCI pioneered some of the most innovative and successful emergency response systems in India like the Golden Hour Project-India’s first wireless -controlled Ambulance Service during the Congress Centenary Celebration in Mumbai in 1985 which was inaugurated by Smt Sonia Gandhi in presence of then Prime Minister Shri Rajiv Gandhi. For the last 15 years, he has run a primary care system that he designed and developed in rural India, which continues to be one of the most successful and respected not-for-profit models of healthcare provision.

 

He was awarded Hon Fellowship of The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow in August 2007.

In 2009, President of Republic of Nepal awarded him Hon Member of Surgical Society of Nepal for his outstanding contribution in development of postgraduate surgical education in Nepalin collaboration with National Academy of Medical Science (NAMS) of Nepal.
