Dr Arun Jamkar
Former Vice Chancellor, Maharashtra University
of Health Sciences, Nashik
I was born and brought up in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra. Witnessing the struggles of the underprivileged made me want to work towards alleviating their suffering and my dreams of becoming a doctor took shape.
I began my journey as a medical student from GMC Aurangabad. Since then, I have spent three decades teaching Surgery and performing thousands of major operations in places like Grant Medical College, Mumbai and BJ Medical College, Pune. My consistent inclination towards medical research resulted in a Ph.D. in Surgical Oncology from National Institute of Virology, Pune. A significant milestone of this journey was attaining the position of Dean of BJ Medical College, Pune.
During this time, I was able to spearhead such efforts like managing the Swine Flu epidemic and disaster management of German Bakery bomb blast. In culmination of this journey, I was fortunate to serve as the Vice Chancellor of Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nashik.
Over the years I have helped create an ecosystem for interdisciplinary research between Science, Technology, Ayurvedic and Homeopathic Medicine. One such example of interdisciplinary collaboration would be Clinical Engineering by creating Engineers for Hospital.
I wish to continue to serve the society by applying technology to improve the health and quality of life of the common man.
I am proud that I created a movement of teaching Bio ethics in medical curriculum through national nodal center of UNESCO chair of bioethics in Haifa in all state medical universities of India. This was possible for me cause of position of Chairman, Association of health professional universities of India
