National President of Indian Medical Association, New Delhi

Dr J A Jayalal, a government medical practitioner from Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu, was elected national president of the Indian Medical Association, a professional body of doctors that has nearly four lakh doctors as members. Dr Jayalal, a professor of surgery in Tirunelveli Medical College, will take over from the incumbent president Dr Rajan Sharma on December 27, a release said.

Expressing the challenges ahead for doctors amidst the new education policy and the National Medical Commission, Jayalal said the IMA would strive hard to restore the purity and sanctity of modern medicine without mixing it with other traditional streams. The IMA would convince the Centre to come out with the Central Healthcare Professionals Protection Act to prevent violence against doctors, he said.

He is serving in the Health and Family Welfare Department as Medical Officer since 1993 and at present working as Associate Professor in Surgery in Government Medical College Hospital, Kanyakumari.

He is also serve as State Hon’ble General Secretary for the largest professional organization IMA in Tamilnadu state and also National coordinator for the Academic Wings of IMA.

He has obtained special training in Minimally Invasive Laparoscopic surgery from various Stalwarts in this field and enjoy the pleasure of starting the Laparoscopic surgery in our Medical College since 2006. I also serve as Hon. Professor in Laparoscopy in IAGES and involved in the various training programmes as faculty.

Special interest in FAMILYMEDICINE concept and as a priority and doing lot of academic works in this field.
